Having a dog around a small, helpless baby can make some people uneasy, especially when the dog belongs to a breed often labeled as “aggressive.”
At the top of that list for many is the pit bull — a breed frequently viewed as unpredictable or dangerous.
But one California mom has her pet pit bull to thank for saving both her life and her baby’s.
Mom Latana Chai says baby Masailah and their pit bull, Sasha, were born just days apart and are inseparable. They share a bed, take baths together, and spend nearly every moment side by side.
Their bond was about to grow even stronger when a fire broke out in a neighbor’s home.
It was around midnight on a Saturday when Latana noticed Sasha acting strangely.
“I heard a loud bang and I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ I heard Sasha crying and she kept jumping at the door. As soon as I got to the door, she runs in and starts barking,” Latana said, according to Kare 11.
Found the pit bull in the baby’s bedroom
When she opened the door to let Sasha in, the dog sprinted straight to Masailah’s room. That’s when Latana saw black smoke creeping down from the ceiling — the fire next door was spreading into their home.
Latana rushed into the baby’s room and found Sasha grabbing Masailah by the diaper, trying to pull her to safety.
The family credits Sasha’s early warning barks and quick instincts for saving them.
