A newborn baby boy has died in a heartbreaking case that has shocked people around the world. He was only two days old. Now, a doctor is facing serious criminal charges.
Reports say the tragedy occurred after the baby was circumcised at a private clinic in California. But something went terribly wrong.
Authorities say the doctor, Hong‑An Jan, may have administered the wrong drug during the procedure. Instead of a local anesthetic, the baby was allegedly given a powerful narcotic.
Soon after the circumcision, the baby’s parents noticed something was wrong. Their son became extremely weak and unresponsive.
The worried parents brought him back to the clinic, but they say the doctor insisted everything was normal.
“Jan only ‘looked’ at [Charles] and reassured [his parents] that these symptoms were ‘normal’ post‑circumcision reactions and advised them to return home,” a civil suit filed by the parents against Jan and South Coast Global Medical Center in Santa Ana states, according to the NY Post. “He did not take any blood samples or order any laboratory studies, even though he observed symptoms … consistent with exposure to opiate substances.”

The lawsuit says the baby showed “profound lethargy” and struggled to feed. The parents contacted the doctor again because they were increasingly concerned.
But they were told the symptoms were normal and were sent home.
Tragically, the next day, the baby stopped breathing. He was rushed to the hospital — but it was too late. Doctors were unable to save him.
A later report determined the cause of death to be bronchopneumonia linked to drug intoxication. Investigators believe the outcome may have been preventable. One detective described the situation as “negligent and preventable.”
The doctor has now been charged with involuntary manslaughter. He has denied the accusations and pleaded not guilty.
Meanwhile, the baby’s parents have filed a lawsuit accusing the doctor of medical malpractice and wrongful death. His medical license has been suspended while the case moves forward.
