John Nolan, best known for his roles in Batman and Person of Interest, has died at the age of 87.
According to the Stratford-Upon-Avon Herald, Nolan passed away on Saturday, though the cause of death has not yet been confirmed. His loss marks the passing of a performer whose work spanned theater, film, and television over several decades.
Nolan was widely recognized for portraying Douglas Fredericks, a member of the Wayne Enterprises board, in Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), both starring Christian Bale. His calm, authoritative presence made the character memorable within Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed Batman trilogy.
He also became well known to television audiences for his role as MI6 operative John Greer in the second season of Person of Interest, created by his nephew Jonathan Nolan. He later contributed behind the scenes on more than two dozen episodes, further deepening his involvement with the series.
In addition to being Jonathan Nolan’s uncle, he was also the uncle of director Christopher Nolan. Over the years, he appeared in four of Christopher’s films: Following (1998), Dunkirk (2017), Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight Rises. Page Six reached out to representatives for both Christopher and Jonathan but did not receive an immediate response.
Nolan’s most recent screen credit came in 2024, when he appeared in an episode of Dune: Prophecy, demonstrating that he continued working well into his later years.
Before his film and television career took off, Nolan began as a stage actor. He studied at the Drama Centre in London and spent two additional years training with the Royal Shakespeare Company, experiences that shaped his craft before he transitioned to larger on‑screen roles.
