Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s wedding dress continues to have a lasting impact on bridal fashion.
On Sept. 21, 1996, Carolyn married John F. Kennedy Jr. in an intimate ceremony at the First African Baptist Church on Cumberland Island, Georgia. Only 40 of their closest friends and family attended.
For the nuptials, Carolyn wore a pearl‑colored silk slip dress cut on the bias with a cowl neckline. The gown was designed by her close friend Narciso Rodriguez, whom she met while working as a publicist at Calvin Klein. In a September 2018 interview with Vogue, Rodriguez reflected on creating the dress that helped launch his brand.
“It was a great moment in my career but also a beautiful moment in my personal life,” he said. “Someone I loved very much asked me to make the most important dress of her life.”
The FX and Hulu limited series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, which premiered in February 2026, recreated several of Carolyn’s iconic looks. Episode 6, titled “The Wedding,” features a version of her sleek bridal gown.
⭐ The Dress Was Designed by Narciso Rodriguez
Rodriguez created Carolyn’s wedding dress at her request. In a February 2026 Vogue interview, he recalled the beginning of their friendship.
“I met Carolyn when we both started to work at Calvin Klein and we lived in the same apartment building,” he said. “And then her apartment became her shoe closet and she lived out of my apartment. Those were really great memorable years.”
He also remembered the moment she asked him to design her gown: “I remember going to Odeon and having cosmos with her at the bar and her telling me that John had proposed and would I make her dress? It was such an exciting moment in all of our lives.”
Rodriguez also designed Caroline Kennedy’s navy matron‑of‑honor gown, according to PEOPLE’s cover story at the time. JFK Jr. wore a midnight‑blue suit and white vest designed by Gordon Henderson, another friend of Carolyn’s.
⭐ The Silk Slip Dress Featured a Cowl Neckline
Carolyn chose a simple, minimalist gown: a floor‑length silk crepe slip dress cut on the bias, with a cowl neckline and deep cowl back.
Rodriguez told The New York Times that the dress was “very sensuous,” adding that it was “what we both wanted from the beginning.”
He later told Vogue that he presented Carolyn with several designs before she settled on the slip dress. “I had given her a couple of ideas, she thought one was too architectural, she pulled the neckline down and a dress was born,” he said.
The gown cost $40,000, but Rodriguez gifted the custom design to his close friend, per The New York Times.
In an October 2020 appearance on PBS’s Finding Your Roots, Rodriguez said he never considered the public reaction when he agreed to make the dress. “I made that wedding dress with so much love for the person that I loved most in the whole world, and I never viewed it as a press event,” he said.

Carolyn completed her minimalist bridal look with a silk tulle veil and white sheer gloves — both designed by Rodriguez — and crystal‑beaded satin Manolo Blahnik sandals. She secured her low bun with a hair clip that belonged to her mother‑in‑law, Jackie Kennedy, per Vanity Fair.
During dinner, she let her hair down. “It was literal with her. Her hair was either up or down,” wedding guest Sasha Chermayeff told PEOPLE editor‑at‑large Liz McNeil and RoseMarie Terenzio for their 2024 book JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography. “And it had a lot of relationship to how she was feeling.”
Her engagement ring also echoed Jackie’s style: a diamond and sapphire eternity band inspired by Jackie’s “swimming ring,” which she wore when not wearing her wedding ring.

In CBK: Caroline Bessette Kennedy: A Life in Fashion by Sunita Kumar Nair, hairstylist George Kyriakos shared that Carolyn was late to her wedding due to a last‑minute alteration. Despite extensive fittings, she had lost weight leading up to the ceremony, and the dress had to be taken in.
Getting the gown on took “an hour” because “it was so cut on the bias and so fitted,” said Gogo Ferguson, owner of Cumberland Island’s Greyfield Inn. “It was like pouring cream over her body.”
Still, Ferguson said Carolyn wasn’t nervous — she was excited.
The delay meant the ceremony began at sunset. “I always thought that it made everything perfect in a way because the evening sun was setting and then the wedding was candlelit,” Chermayeff said. “It was beautiful.”
⭐ Carolyn’s Dress Sparked a Minimalist Bridal Trend
Carolyn’s sleek slip dress helped define a minimalist bridal movement that continues to influence royals and celebrities.
Former Harper’s Bazaar editor‑in‑chief Kate Betts told Vanity Fair in 2021 that while fashion was already shifting toward simplicity in the late ’90s, Carolyn’s dress was “revolutionary.”
“Vera Wang and Carolina Herrera were simplifying their designs, but not as simple as a slip dress,” she said. “[Carolyn’s dress] crystallized that trend. That was her aesthetic, and her wedding dress was a very, very bold expression of that minimalism.”
Celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens and Kate Moss have worn bias‑cut slip dresses for their weddings. When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry in 2018, she chose a sleek, unembellished Givenchy gown.
Designer Clare Waight Keller told Vanity Fair in 2023 that she and Markle were inspired by Carolyn’s iconic bridal look.
“Both of us also loved Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and the fact that she surprised everyone with the simplicity of what she wore for her [1996] wedding,” she said.
