Hollywood often seems overflowing with love stories, yet it’s no secret that many relationships in show business don’t last. Fortunately, that hasn’t been the case for Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Their bond appears unbreakable.
The two have been together for nearly four decades, and the story of how their romance began is truly heartwarming. Still, they never married, and to this day, they have no plans to officially tie the knot. Why? Goldie Hawn has a very clear explanation.
Goldie and Kurt have been together for 41 years. They’ve been major stars on the big screen for decades and have shared a loving relationship built on devotion to their family.
Their long-lasting commitment is remarkable, and their love story is even more extraordinary. Goldie and Kurt first met in 1966 while filming The One and Only, Genuine Original Family Band. Hawn recalled their first meeting in an interview with BBC Radio 4.
Celebrity relationships come with many complications, and fans constantly hear about new romances forming and ending. Regardless of fame, seeing two people stay in love for years is always uplifting. One couple that stands out more than most is Kurt Russell, 73, and Goldie Hawn, 78.
“I was 21 and he was 16,” Hawn said. “I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young. Then years later, we met again, and I remembered how much I liked him when we first met. We both said we’d never date another actor, so it just shows you never can tell.”
How Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell Met
At the time, they weren’t ready to start dating. Goldie Hawn married actor Gus Trikonis in 1969, but they separated after four years. She was granted a divorce in June 1976 and married Bill Hudson just weeks later — a marriage that lasted six years.
In 1983, Russell and Hawn crossed paths again while filming Swing Shift. This time, the charming Russell tried to impress her with the line: “Man, you’ve got a great figure.”
“I was severely hungover and didn’t know Goldie at all outside of working with her years before,” Russell said in a 2017 interview with Conan O’Brien.
“I didn’t know what I was going to see, and she had a great body. So the first thing that came out was, ‘Man, you’ve got a great figure.’ It came out fast and could’ve gone wrong, but she said, ‘Why thank you.’”
At the time, Goldie had two children from her marriage to Bill Hudson: Oliver, born in 1976, and Kate, born in 1979.
While filming Swing Shift, Kurt and Goldie went out one night after work. He took her to The Playboy Club, where they spent hours talking. Later, they decided to visit a new house Goldie had bought — but she didn’t have the keys, so they ended up breaking in.
The police eventually arrived, but the incident became an iconic first date. From that point on, nothing could separate them. More than four decades later, Goldie and Kurt remain deeply in love.
Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell – Family and Children
Goldie’s children, Oliver and Kate, both pursued careers in film. Oliver is known for his role in Rules of Engagement, while Kate became a major movie star.
Her breakthrough came in Cameron Crowe’s semi-autobiographical film Almost Famous, where she played a seasoned groupie. Hudson won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and earned an Academy Award nomination.
Despite their busy careers, Goldie’s children often gather for family dinners, especially since Kate lives just down the street. When Goldie turned 60, Kurt took the entire family to Tahiti for a memorable vacation.
“It’s always so much fun when we all meet up. We’re very, very close and see each other as often as we can,” Goldie told Now To Love.
Kate and Oliver host a podcast, Sibling Revelry. In one episode, they described the moment Kurt won their mother’s heart. Kate recalled being about three years old, while Oliver was six.
“It was the first time she brought him home. It wasn’t their first date, but it’s a beautiful story,” Kate said.
“We were living in deep Malibu, and Mom said that was when she fell in love with Kurt — because she brought him home and we were already asleep.”
Kate and Oliver shared a room. Kurt walked in and sat beside them.
“He sat next to you first,” Kate told Oliver, “and watched you sleep. Then he came to me. I think he watched me the longest.”
Goldie later said, “I remembered everything and why I fell in love.”
One thing led to another, and Kurt and Goldie welcomed their son, Wyatt Russell, in 1986. Kurt also has a son, Boston Russell, born in 1980, from his marriage to Season Hubley.
The couple has enjoyed long, successful careers and continues to act. They rarely watch their own films, but they made an exception for Overboard (1987), which they watched together to reminisce about their relationship.
“You know how sometimes you forget why you fell in love? I remembered everything — why I fell in love. It was really something to watch that,” Goldie told James Corden in 2017.
The Real Reason Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell Never Married
Despite being together for nearly four decades, they’ve chosen not to marry.
According to them, this is part of why their bond is so strong. Their love and devotion go beyond traditional labels. Goldie has said that a healthy relationship doesn’t require spending every moment together.
Speaking with Cosmopolitan in 1986, Hawn explained why she and Kurt never married. To her, marriage is “ridiculous.”
“We’re very happy,” she said while expecting her third child.
“The child is getting the name Hawn Russell. The kids are happy, and Kurt brought me a beautiful ring to symbolize our love.”
“Actually, owning a home, splitting things down the middle — none of that really matters. You have to let it go and move on. Otherwise, what are you investing in? Concepts — and concepts can break in an instant. That’s why I think marriage is ridiculous.”
To celebrate seven years together, Kurt bought Goldie a beautiful ring, which she wore on her wedding finger. They even had a small ceremony.
“Well, we had a little ceremony, but it wasn’t a marriage ceremony. No, God, no. We’re far too together for that,” Goldie said.
In 2007, she told Woman’s Day: “We’ve done perfectly without marrying. I already feel devoted — and isn’t that what marriage is supposed to do?”
Eight Grandchildren
Despite not being married, Goldie has occasionally referred to Kurt as her husband. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she said they still debate what to call each other. Winfrey noted that a marriage certificate isn’t what makes a relationship meaningful.
“It won’t,” Goldie said. “And Kurt and I both feel that way. If you leave the door open, you’ll never walk out of it. Sometimes, if you close the door and create a sense of finality, things happen to people.”
The past decades have been remarkable for the Hawn-Russell family. They now have eight grandchildren, and their Instagram posts show them showering love on the youngest members. Kurt revealed that the grandchildren don’t call them grandma and grandpa — instead, they’re Gogo and Gogi.
In May 2017, their children and grandchildren joined them for a special moment when the couple’s names were immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They even shared a loving kiss during the ceremony.
After 41 years together — celebrated on Valentine’s Day — they make a point of showing each other love every day.
“We’re very, very lucky.”
On Instagram, Goldie and Kurt often remind each other and their fans how deeply in love they remain. They’re honest about the challenges relationships face, but they continue to show what lasting devotion looks like.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, they quarantined together. Goldie admitted that the long days were difficult, despite her upbeat nature.
“We’re very, very lucky and I’m incredibly grateful, but I feel tremendous angst, a tremendous sadness,” she told Good Morning Britain.
The couple spent time in the mountains with their children and grandchildren.
“When I wake up, Kurt brings me coffee — it’s the sweetest thing, and it starts the day off great. I have my dogs in bed with me, and I snuggle with them. We have breakfast with the kids and talk. Then I go on a bike ride with Kate,” Goldie told Hello! Magazine.
“As scary as this time is, I try to savor every moment because I get to be with my family.”
Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell Don’t Agree on Everything
On an April episode of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Goldie explained that she and Kurt don’t always see eye to eye. She also revealed the “glue” that has kept them together.
“We don’t agree on everything. His politics are different from mine. There are things that could divide us. But the greatest thing we have is our family,” she said.
“That’s where we thrive and where we find joy.”
She added, “I can’t explain it, but he was the one for me. It wasn’t just that he was sexy and handsome — it was that he matched my devotion to children being number one.”
“The real seduction was his personality and his focus on the kids.”
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell continue to inspire with their long-lasting love. They remain deeply devoted to each other, and we wish them many more happy years together.
Please share their beautiful story with friends and family.
